If we did, all those places carding for alcohol purchases would be
violating adults' rights.
Are the stores recording the complete information on the ID
or are they simply checking the age on the card visually?
there's a hefy data mining industry that looks at those cards
and tracks your info...
Yeah, if it's just you flashing it at a checkout counter
worker and paying in cash, then no. But if you're swiping
it at a bar...
In my state, the purchaser presents ID, typically a driver's license, to
purchase alchohol and cigarettes and other tobacco products, and
marijuana too. The clerk or bartender records the driver's license
number by scanning the barcode. That allows the lookup in the state
database or extract of the state database made available for retail
transactions, so yeah, the store or bar must be capturing any
identifying information made available. I think they are required to in
case of an audit for underage purchases.
There's no more "just flash the ID and don't allow inspection". There's
no anonymity in purchase transactions.
With credit card purchases, the merchant could get identifying
informatio as well.
