I agree with your observations about Paul.  He is surprisingly humble
and soft-spoken given the life he led and his incredible achievements. He gave Musician magazine an interview in 1980 in which he is almost
unbelievably low-key.
It's the people who have accomplished nothing who do are more likely to
brag and demonstrate arrogance.
