THE CRICKETS (Brunswick 55094)
“LONESOME TEARS” [Nor Va Jak BMI—Hollv]
“ITS SO EASY” [Nor va Jak BMI—Holly, Petty]
The Crickets, on the charts with every release since their initial
smash, “That’ll Be The Day”, could have one of their biggest
money-makers in their latest coupling. “Lonesome Tears” is socko rocker
with a catchy melody and a tearful lyric excellently delivered by the
boys. Buddy Holly’s vocaling in the spotlight is great. Coupling, “It’s
So Easy”, is also a strong rocker neatly tailored for teen tastes. Hot
twin-threat with upper half getting the nod.

THE TEMPTATIONS (Savoy 1550) [From Bayonne, NJ)
“DON’T YOU KNOW” [Planemar BMI—More]
The vocal group manages a pretty effective rock ’n roll statement as it
plays
around in upbeat fashion. Combo backing is strong- on guitar work. Many
r&r sound essentials are performed to the hilt here. Kids will
appreciate deejay spins.

“I LOVE YOU (THIS I KNOW)” [Planemar BMI—Moore]
The boys get over a rockabilly feel in this potent entry. Big-sounding
performance.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE HONEYCONES (Ember 1042)
“GEE WHIZ” (2:30) [Springton ASCAP — Alberts]
The Honeycones featuring Bobby and Tony, blend their voices warmly as
they sing a soothing romantic ballad. Lads have an attractive sound.
Song is built around the “Gee Whiz” expression from the Everly Brothers’
hit “All I Have To Do Is Dream”. Overall sound is reminiscent of the
Everlys’ style too. Side could make it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvlNCtw7E7g
“ROCKIN’ IN THE KNEES” (2:12) [Alstel BMI — D’arenzo, Federa]
The boys get a strong rockin’ beat backdrop for this solid jumper.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ROULETTES (Champ 102)
“I SEE A STAR” [G & H Music—Galanti]

Andy Griffith takes a breather from his usual recitation type disks, and
hands in a strong singing job as he belts out a good rock and roll
novelty about a “dangerous” gal. Cute side that could attract attention.
Some parts of the
deck are spoken.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=molyTCT2MSs
“MIDNIGHT SPECIAL” (2:28) [Folkways BMI — Campbell, Newman]
Another singing performance by Andy is this cute corny rocker. Andy has

JOHNNY TILLOTSON (Cadence 1353)
“WELL I’M YOUR MAN” (2:15) [Southern Belle BMI—Tillotson]
“DREAMY EYES” (2:19) [Southern Belle BMI—Tillotson]
The torrid Cadence label has an exciting newcomer in Johnny Tillotson
who’s destined for stardom if his initial performance is any indication
of this lad’s talent. Working with his own material, Tillotson excels as
he belts across “Well I’m Your Man”. Exciting rock and roll jumper right
up the teenagers’ alley. And his unusual pronunciation of the word
“girl” is sure to win teen raves. There’s
a bright future in store for Johnny. Flip is a pretty romantic ballad
with a good fish beat.

the unusual yet exciting voice of Sam Hawkins. Lad’s falsetto work is
extremely effective. Watch this sleeper closely.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UI06RyfgJh4
“THE WHATCHAMACALLIT” [Sidney BMI—Hammer]
The performer picks up the pace and shuffles thru a good jump item for
the hoofers.

Side has a great dance beat that should go big with the kids.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1_9RViUqdI
“LITTLE LOVER” (1:57) [Central BMI—Carrol]
There’s somewhat of a country flavoring in this Latin-beat rocker. Side
reminds the reviewer of Buddy Holly’s technique.

BOBBY PEDRICK, JR. (Bigtop 3004)
“WHITE BUCKS AND SADDLE SHOES” (2:05) [Brenner BMI—Poinus, Shuman]
"STRANDED” (2:05) [Home Folks BMI—Mann, Jacobson]
The Bigtop label comes up with its strongest side to date as it
introduces newcomer Bobby Pedrick, Jr., with an excellent number that
could make it into the winner’s circle. Pedrick, just 12 years old, has
a refreshing voice tailor- made for the teenage material which he is
singing, “White Bucks And Saddle Shoes”. Bright fingersnappin’ ditty
about the attire of the teen all neatly wrapped up in a romantic
storyline. Pedrick is headed for the big time. Flip is an inviting
rock-a ballad. Infectious romancer that grows on you.

THE FIVE BLOBS (Columbia 41250)
“THE BLOB” (2:20) [Famous ASCAP—David, Bacharach]
An unidentified, but supposedly famous Columbia artist who works on this
disk via multiple tracks, is billed as the Five Blobs. Side is a
contagious Latin beat rocker about a blob of some indescribable
substance that oozes, creeps,
leaps, etc. Tune is from the Paramount pic of the same name. Deck has a
catchy instrumental which takes up the major portion of the disk. Every
other chorus has “group” vocalizing. Off beat item that could break.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejtPJc-fDZ8
“SATURDAY NIGHT IN TIAJUANA” (2:30) [Famous ASCAP — Bacharach]
Another contagious ditty with voices, handclapping.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OTIS WILLIAMS & HIS CHARMS (DeLuxe 6174)
“DON’T WAKE UP THE KIDS” (2:37) [Jay & Gee BMI—Glover, Kennedy]
“YOU’LL REMAIN FOREVER” (2:22) [Roosevelt BMI—O. Blackwell]
e Otis Williams and his Charms turn to the novelty department as he
makes a powerful bid for a two-market click  with his newest DeLuxe
slicing. It’s a handclapping rocker loaded with vocal and instrumental
tricks that the teensters are sure to take a strong liking to. The
artists are having a loud party, in the “Yakety Yak” style, when a
speeded-up, 45 to 78 rpm voice exclaims, “Don’t Wake Up The Kids”. Deck
is good bet to wake up the record buyer. Get with it. Under
end, titled “You’ll Remain Forever”, is an attractive, romantic
rock-a-ballad that Williams and the crew polish off in smooth style.
Tasty ear-pleaser that should easily fit in the deejay’s programming
guide.

ROBERT & JOHNNY (Old Town 1058)
“I’M TRULY TRULY YOURS” [Maureen BMI—Mitchell, Carr]
“ETERNITY WITH YOU” [Maureen BMI—Mitchell, Carr]
The team of Robert & Johnny has made a winning habit out of tunes
dealing with the love and devotion theme and their latest Old Town
offering should prove no exception to the rule. The boys are sure to
make it three-in-a-row as they follow “We Belong Together” and “I
Believe In You” with a similar opus tagged “I’m Truly Truly Yours”. It
oozes with the sweet tenderness that the boys squeeze out in
ultra-commercial fashion. On the under half the songsters continue in
the same vein as they sway over another lovely, fish beat ballad dubbed
“Eternity With You”. Strong coupler but it’s the top end for the
winner’s circle.

FENTION ROBINSON (Duke 191)

“CRAZY CRAZY LOVING” (2:18) [Lion BMI—Robinson, Scott, Robey]
Here’s a pairing that’s gonna put money in the pockets of ops and
dealers alike. It’s a potent new Duke two-sider that features Fention
Robinson, vocally, and the Castle Rockers, instrumentally. The group had
a territorial noise-maker in their last effort, labeled “The Freeze”,
and either end of the latest twosome could break thru on a national
level. On one end, a fast paced shuffler, Fention wails in top drawer
down-home style as he takes the “Mississippi Steamboat” back to his
baby. On the other end, an exciting romantic rocker, the gal gives him
that “Crazy Crazy Feeling”. Dandy duo. Take your pick.

fetching shuffler that Annie grooves in a manner that’s sure to set the
hoofers in motion.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5s61wb8iDY
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SIL AUSTIN (Mercury 71361)
“THE CHARMER” (1:58) [Norbay BMI—S. Austin]
Sil Austin,
whose “Slow Walk” took a fast ride up the charts could do more of the
same with his latest instrumental original. It’s a tantalizing rock-a-
cha-cha that brings the bongos, claves, etc. into play with Austin’s
swinging sax work. Could happen.
“RIFF RAFF” (2:18) [Norbay BMI—S. Austin]
This end Austin, and his crew, honks up a storm as he rides his tenor
sax over a solid, self-penned rafter shaker. Two strong coin-catchers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-WJ-mErb9k
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE V-NOTES (Volk 102)
“GET A BABY LIKE MINE” (2:07) [Fairway BMI—J. Little John, J. Fields]
The lead vocal happily reflects that his gal’s a winner, as the rest of
the V-Notes tastefully join in on a quick steppin’ ditty that’s gonna
attract a heap of juke box loot. Could be a hot debut item for the
group.
https://youtu.be/lmeBxSa0OiM?t=3
“SMASHED” (1:50) [Fairway W “ BMI — F. Stryker, L. Dunig]
Here the artists swing back and forth on a house-rockin’ opus about a
gal who has really loosened the guy’s under pinnings. Good dance stuff.
https://youtu.be/0Xd9ubVYXn8?t=3
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE FIVE JADES (Duke 188)
“ROOK AND ROLL MOLLY” (2:27) [Lion BMI—B. Flonnoy]
Duke intros a new group of songstylists who have what it takes to make a
‘run for the money’. They’re the Five Jades, featuring Charles Turner in
the lead slot, and they refreshingly carve out a sparkling hand-clapper.
Bright instrumental support on a rocker tailor-made for the kids.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypQHYJ_bsoA
“WITHOUT YOUR LOVE” (2:30) [Lion BMI — L. Eaton]
On the reverse etching Luevenia Eaton takes the lead as the outfit slows
down the pace to convincingly render a touching, fish-beat lover’s plea.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouOF4RRUsYM
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE FASCINATORS (Dooto 441)
“SHIVERS AND SHAKES” Dr (2:45) [Dootsie Williams BMI —D. Harris]
Here’s a mildly amusing novelty item that could stir up a fuss on the
jockey charts. It displays the vocal asthenias of the Fascinators on a
ditty about a guy who has a funny feeling all over cause it’s his first
date. Catchy rocker
to watch closely.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEZJFSZvbMU
“TEARDROP EYES” (2:52) [Dootsie Williams BMI—Harris, Harper]
This side falls into the crying towel, romantic ballad category and it’s
handled in warm, sincere style by the songsters. Pretty offering.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNEApHeVw7w
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
V. & B. B. (J & S 1623)
“THEY JUST ROCKING & ROLLING” (2:12) [Zells BMI—Sanders, B. B.]
Two newcomers, known simply as V. & B. B., stand a strong chance of
having their initials splashed all over the r&r charts via their J&S
bow. The songsters
enticingly blend on a terrific rocker aimed at the teenage trade.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riUV4x0M9Bc
“LET’S BEGIN AGAIN” (2:32) [Zells BMI—Jackson, Sanders]
On this end the twosome employs the softer, subdued r&r approach as they
cruise over a persuasive steady driving, rock-a-ballad.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hkaf9UKaUlE
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RONNIE KNOX (Dooto 442)
“BABY PLAY BALL WITH ME”(2:32) [Dootsie Williams BMI—C. Williams]
Ronnie Knox is moving at top speed on this engaging novelty item and
could very well carry it over the ‘hit goal line’. The artist, along
with a spirited choral and musical assist, sends up this solid chart
contender in rapid-fire manner.
“IT’S FASCINATION” (2:20) [Dootsie Williams BMI —C.Williams]
The chorus joins Ronnie on another quick moving, tho somewhat slower
than the top side, love affair.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SONS OF JEHOVAH (Nashboro 626)
"THE HOLY BIBLE” (2:41) [Excellorec BMI — F. Perkins]
The Sons Of Jehovah get their message across with telling effect as they
ride out this rousing spiritual in thrilling fashion. Wonderful piece of
wax for the ‘bible belt’ customer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQpgGQ-lv0o
“KEEP ME AND TEACH ME” (2:35) [Excellorec BMI—F. Perkins]
Under lid is another inspiring opus that the group does up in slow beat
style. Fine coupler tho heavily overshadowed by the flip.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDDIE NOACK ("D“ 1037)
“HAVE BLUES—WILL TRAVEL” (2:22) [Glad BMI—E. Noack, W. Walker]
Eddie Noack puts loads of feeling into this intriguing, up beat piece
that makes use of the well known expression. Expressive waxing that
should make the jocks sit up and take notice.
https://youtu.be/hXC_lS88T4Y?t=3
“THE PRICE OF LOVE” (2:08) [Glad BMI—D. Edwards, E. Noack]
This end, a quick tempo honky tonker finds Noack passing along some
friendly advise to a guy who's having trouble with his gal.

CHUDD FORMS KNIGHT RECORDS - SUBSIDIARY OF IMPERIAL
HOLLYWOOD—Lew Chudd, president of Imperial Records, last week announced
the formation of a subsidiary label, Knight Records, which he debuted
nationally with the release of two singles.
Chudd, long an advocate of minimum monthly releases and a small roster
of singers, stated that one of the main reasons for the new label is
that Imperial has too many contractees now to add more talent. He has
been forced to turn down many artists in the past six months, because he
refuses to release more than six singles a month, and current Imperial
contracts fill this quota adequately. His theory is that each new record
is a potential hit and must be given time and exposure by distributors
initially. “No matter how many records you  release each week,” says
Chudd,  “only one or two can get the concentrated push needed to launch
it in any given area.”  Toward this end, Chudd has lined up thirty-one
distributors who will handle Knight Records, and in only a few cases do
any of
the thirty-one handle Imperial too. “Giving the Knight line to
distributors who do not handle Imperial,” continues Chudd, “serves two
purposes. First, our long-standing Imperial distributors do not have to
spend time on another new line and  can still concentrate on our six
regular new singles each month; and secondly, we have two distributors
in each area competing against each other with our product, which I
think is healthy business.”
Chudd emphatically stated that no artist who is currently under
contract to Imperial will be moved to  Knight; that all artists signed
to  Knight will be signed exclusively and  will never be moved to
Imperial after  a hit record on the new label; and  that Knight will be
given the same  emphasis and attention as Imperial, though same
personnel now running Imperial will produce and run Knight as well.
Initial pactings on Knight are two  groups: The Roblns and The Popsides.
Their first releases, which also mark the debut of Knight, are “A
Quarter to Twelve,” b/w “Pretty Little Dolly,” by The Robins; and  “This
is the End” b/w “Thumb  Print,” by The Popsicles. Chudd has taken to the
road to help kick off  the label and initial distributors. Knight
distributors are as follows: A-1 Record Distributors, New OrIeans;
Allied Record Distributors, East Hartford, Connecticut; Big State
Distributing Company, Dallas; Cadet Distributing Company, Detroit; Custom Distributing Company, Cleveland; Dumont Record Distributors, Boston; Dixie Distributing Company,  Atlanta; Eric Distributing Company,
San Francisco; Essex Distributing Company, Newark; Ideal Record
Products, New York City; Indiana State Record Distributors,
