PATTI PAGE (Mercury 70416; 70416 x 45)
“WHAT A DREAM" [Berkshire BMI—Willis]
“I CRIED [Meadowbrook ASCAP—Tesone, Elias]
Patti Page, the consistent hit producer who needs no introduction to
ops, dealers or jockeys, sends across a sensational new piece of wax
that really sounds great. In keeping with her policy of varying the
material she records, the “Singing Rage” gets hold of a tremendous piece
of blues material that stems from the R & B field. It’s a real
penetrating job dubbed “What A Dream.” Patti really gives her all for
the song. And she gives it a real bluesy going over. The piano backdrop
is great. On the lower lid “I Cried,” the song bird eases through a
lovely ballad in her warm and sincere fashion. Top half just can’t miss.

TONY BENNETT (Columbia 40272; 4-40272)
“CINNAMON SINNER" (2:55) [Raleigh BMI—Chase]
“TAKE ME BACK AGAIN" (3:01) [Jefferson ASCAP—Evans, Kahn, Berman]
Tony Bennett’s here again with a great novelty that’ll be right up on
top in short order. Supported by a Percy Faith orking similar to the one
heard on Tony’s smash “Rags To Riches,” the songster leans into this
catchy ditty with all the oomph that his punch packed voice carries.
It’s a delightful number cleverly titled “Cinnamon Sinner.” Lyrics are
cute and simple making this one a top contender for big Summer clicker.
Coupling features the star in a romantic mood as he wends his way
through a sentimental love song labelled “Take Me Back Again.”
Captivating melody and another illustrious Faith accompaniment.

THE FOUR TUNES (Jubilee 5152; 45-5152)
“THE GREATEST FEELING IN THE WORLD" (2:11) [Speir ASCAP—Bass, Jordan]
“LONESOME" (2:15) [Jubilee ASCAP—Best]
The Four Tunes, one of waxdom’s hottest hit making groups dishes up a
new ditty that has all the earmarks of a tremendous Summer smash. It’s a
wonderful
lilter tagged “The Greatest Feeling In The World.” And it’s so different
from their other releases, that this one just has to click. The group’s
secret to success is its versatility. On their first hit platter, they
did a driving rendition of “Marie.” Presently, they’re heading to the
top with a tender ballad
“I Understand Just How You Feel.” This latest side has a barber shop
quartet flavoring. As long as the boys keep mixing ’em up, they can’t
help but hit. Top drawer material with a melody and lyric that stays
with you. Flip is rhythm item
called “Lonesome” with a good bluesy flavor. We’re wild about the upper
lid.

SLEEPER OF THE WEEK
BILL HALEY AND HIS COMETS (Decca 29204; 9-29204)
“SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL” (2:29) [Progressive BMI—Calhoun]
“A.B.C. BOOGIE” (2:27) [Myers ASCAP—Russell, Spickol]
Here’s a great opportunity for the juke boxes to cash in on a natural.
It’s a sensational rocker by the “Crazy, Man, Crazy” gang, Bill Haley
and his Comets. Tagged “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” it’s a sensational
souped-up rhythm number
that drives from the opening bar right through to the very last note.
Bill hands in a top grade vocal as the Comets assist with a jolting
backdpop. The tune, incidentally, is currently one of the hottest in the
Rhythm and Blues field, and with R & B tunes catching on more and more
in the pop market, this disk could go all the way. One of the best sides
the Comets have ever presented. Coupling is another more subdued jumper
labelled “A.B.C. Boogie.” Keep an eye on the top half.

THE CASH BOX
*AWARD O' THE WEEK"
RUTH BROWN (Atlantic 1026)
"OH WHAT A DREAM” (2:52) [Berkshire BMI—Willis]
"PLEASE DON'T FREEZE” (2:30) [Raleigh BMI—Chase]
Ruth Brown has the wax in this release to break the charts and put the
gal back into the sales figures she deserves. The upper deck, “Oh What A
Dream,” to be corny, has Miss Brown running the gamut of vocal emotions
on a slow tender
blues. The thrush is sweet, tender, happy, excited, sad and dispirited
as she describes the romantic twists and turns of her last night’s
dream. Ruth packs the two and one half minutes of wax with warmth and
feeling as she brings the lyrics to life. Should build the gal’s appeal
to the pop market. The flip, “Please Don’t Freeze,” is an equally
powerful item with a change of pace tempo. Material is strong on both
sides and the Brown treatments should ride them right to the top.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjQdFVp2QtY“JACKIE MAMBO” (2:41) [Progressive BMI — Morris]

retaining the blues effect and not the Latin flavor.

THE DIXIE HUMMING BIRDS (Peacock 1727)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32pTN3l_mow“IF IT HADN’T BEEN FOR YOU” (2:55) [Fred Fisher ASCAP—Singleton]
The husky voiced chantress etches a slow bouncy blues effectively. The
tune is ok and Cherri handles it with a strong performance.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SMOKEY HOGG (Imperial 677)
“MY BABY’S GONE” (2:1b)[Commodore Music BMI—Hogg]

LOUIS JORDAN (Aladdin 3246)
“MESSY BESSY” (2:40) [Jolleen Music—John Hendricks]

Jordan exuberant styling. A good piece of material that could be the
best Jordan release in some time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDrSpICNXTk"I SEEN WHAT’CHA DONE" (2:37) [Bayou Music—Louis Jordan]
Another fast moving item loaded with excitement and Louis Jordan

BILLY KING (Abbott 1001)
“CAN’T GET YOU OUTTA’ MY MIND” (2:20) [Dandelion BMI King]

belting school and he gives an energetic performance of a driving jump.
https://archive.org/details/78_cant-get-you-outta-my-mind_billy-king-billy-king_gbia0434049a“SUGAR DOLL” (2:10) [Dandelion Music BMI—Zack & Thelma Woods]
This deck swings along like a Dixie item. King sings it in that vein,
and plate will please. For the R &B audience it’s the flip deck.
https://archive.org/details/78_sugar-doll_billy-king-zack-thelma-woods_gbia0434049b-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ROY MILTON (Specialty 526)
“GONNA LEAVE YOU BABY” (2:15) [Bar BMI—R. Milton]
“IT’S TOO LATE” (2:42) [Bar BMI—R. Milton]
Roy Milton pops in with a strong middle tempo bouncer “Gonna Leave You,
Baby” that has what it takes to make it a powerful sales puller. Milton
tells his baby
he’s gonna leave her and cryin’ won’t make him stay. The more she cries,
the further he’s goin’ away. The Miltones back Milton with some
effective teamwork. The flip, “It’s Too Late,” Roy sings a slow sad
romantic blues and puts plenty of warmth and feeling into his treatment.
A mellow piece of wax that should help the upper deck gather in the
customers.

PRINCE PATRIDGE (Cat 105)
“CO-OPERATION” part 1 & 2
Humorous novelty item that has already created a fuss in the midwest,
Patridge sings the ditty in simple, unpretentious talky style. The
strength lies in the funny lyrics. The poor male works hard at getting
employment for his fern so that he can live in the manner to which he’d
like to be accustomed to. This is kind of deck that should take off like
crazy.
