The General (later Universal) Postal Union was founded on 9 October 1874 in Bern. In 1948 it became an agency of the United Nations. At its 1969 congress in Tokyo, World Post Day was inaugurated.
I am fond of the world postal system; I hope I don't live to see it collapse. I guess I should celebrate by sending a postcard.
But the language relevance? Crystal talks about a UPU-sponsored letter-writing competition. He talks about changing epistolary conventions.
