Define "gun violence". Is it an absolute value, or relative to populate?

Well, you have concisely stated the problem. One side wants to count
self inflicted gunshot wounds (SIGW) as gun violence and one doesn't.
Since SIGW account for the lion's share of gun deaths (more so in
developed countries, but over 50% worldwide) counting them or not
makes a *huge* difference.
Well, and we can also consider that suicide, serious suicide that is, has been shown to be nearly totally means independent.
If they can't use their first choice, they will go with their second, or their third, but they will attempt suicide and as a serious attempt at suicide the attempt is almost always successful. This is opposed to those seeking attention for their issues and aren't really intending suicide other than perhaps by accident.

Here's one: can anyone define a "DGU"?
Sure legally defending one's self or others from a violent attack in which death or serious injury appears to be the intent.
In extreme cases it doesn't even have to be totally legal. Even a convicted felon can use a gun in self defense.. and be legally justified in their actions.
