In the US, the only link is between what private entities are
willing to accept in fiat currency in exchange.
The Federal Government has no involvement in maintaining the
exchange rate of dollars to gold.

Neither does the Russian government

We'll ignore the minor detail that the US government is devaluing
the dollar daily, and has been for decades.  The Dollar is backed by
"the full faith and credit of the United States".  Not sure that will
remain very much in the future.

Given they lack either....

2024 about $2600 per ounce
