anti-gun activists is almost across the finish line and voters
weren't allowed to testify against it.
The Hawaii state legislature is set to vote as early as Wednesday on
SB 401, a bill that local gun rights groups argue is one of the
largest overreaches in the history of the Aloha State.
The proposal was introduced in January as a 400-word ban on
.50-caliber rifles. This brought more than 400 pages of official
testimony by those on both sides of the bill, with Second Amendment
groups and scores of concerned citizens calling out the would-be ban
for its constitutional infringements, lack of justification, arbitrary
classifications, burden on the law-abiding public, and likely
negligible impact on crime.
However, since those early hearings on the bill, SB 401 was gutted and
replaced with much stronger gun ban language from failed HB 893, and
now, at over 2,600 words, is far more sweeping.
"The language banning these firearms was never given a single hearing
in the Senate," says the group. "It was added at the last minute by
the House without public testimony or full debate. This means the
public was silenced on one of the biggest gun bans in Hawaii history."
The ban has been backed by big-name gun control activists at all
levels, and Hawaii Gov. Josh Green has announced his support for the
measure. Green, a Democrat, has signed numerous anti-gun bills into
law since taking office in 2022.
Give Hawaii to China.
