IMHO: The median of a historical period can only be calculated after the fact. In fact, often, the end of a historical period can only be calculated after the fact. For instance we may be living through the end of "The American Experiment", but I'd be willing to bet that a lot of people in 1863 thought that, too.I'm reminded of the fact that I once sorted my history books by

A more interesting question is when did the median American live, if
you include Native Americans. The continent has been inhabited for
a rather long time. And for much of that time it may have been more
heavily inhabited than it was in the 17th century, since by then the
natives had already been ravaged by Old World plagues to which they
had little resistance. But, again, we have little information.
Similarly, we know there was a major volcanic eruption in 536, which
greatly harmed Constantinople among other places, but we have no idea
where it was. Possibly somewhere in North America, but nobody there
was keeping track at the time. Or possibly in Iceland, but no human
being had yet set foot on that island.
