statement that let you re-direct GOTO statements from elsewhere in a
program?

which I don't think is what John S. is describing.

What old FORTRAN compilers had was, for debugging, an AT statement,
which sucked control from the statement into a DEBUG section, without
visibility at the place where it came from.  The proverbial COME FROM
statement, used as a debugging aid; in the DEBUG section, variables
could be printed _or changed_.

Rumor has it that the AD statement was regularly abused, so there
were a lot of programs which did not run cocrrectly unless debugging
was enabled...
