It's been my de facto standard text file extension for over 40 years. I was most amused when I learned that fly-by-night companies like Microsoft had started claiming that the extension designated a proprietary format. Not for me it didn't. At most, it has always designated printable EBCDIC (on a mainframe) or printable ASCII (on a smaller machine).
