I checked my library. Dividing by zero just returns <infinity>. This feeds through into subsequent operations if an attempt is made to work with it (and may result in <nan>).
However if the explicit library is used (using bn_div()) etc) the function returns a status code that can be checked.
Within the library embedded in my interpreter, I could also choose to trigger an internal exception that user code could trap.
I wouldn't like to have to grapple with an interrupt or signal handler if that is how GMP does it.
