There is an old engineering adage: “in any system, the complexity arises
not so much from the number of components, as from the potential
interactions between them”.

Open-source platforms are made from a great number of interlocking pieces,
which tend to be well-disciplined in their interactions. This is how Linux
distros can scale up to offer tens of thousands of packages for
installation, without falling over.

Proprietary developers tend not to be so disciplined. That is why
Microsoft Windows is the fragile house of cards that it is. And why people
like you cannot manage a comparatively simple cross-platform build without
suffering a lot of pain in the process.
