 I really don't want to go into a religious discussion here.  It is the general opinion of academic Biblical scholars that the use of "40" in the Bible is not trying to give an exact value - merely meaning "lots". It presumably does not mean "vast numbers", nor "a few" - it is more akin to "dozens" in colloquial English.  I did not intentionally imply it is used to mean "tens of thousands", if that is what you thought I was saying.
 If you want to discuss it more, feel free to email me - I am interested in religious history, but it would be even less suitable for comp.lang.c than etymology!
