In school I was taught to use a space as the international-standard
thousands separator, and a centred dot for the decimal point. This was to
get around regional differences over which is comma and which is a dot
etc.

Using “_” as an alternative to the space would have been consistent with
its usage elsewhere, for word breaking in names etc.
