 I agree that energy consumption of e-mail polling is underestimated and
in particular of the push-function.
 My mail on my phones has a polling frequency of 60 minutes and push
turned off deliberately.

On the other hand, the gmail app with default settings and a single gmail account doesn't seem to impact battery usage. I noticed the problem with K-9, with a non google imap account and default settings.
