 Tried a different ring tone?  There are ring tones on my phone I do not
use because they start soft to grow louder.  I won't hear the first soft
rings, so I have less time to answer the phone.  Instead I use an
always-loud ring tone.

I do the reverse. There is a setting that makes the ringing start soft, then increase. That way, if I'm near, it doesn't make me jump.
