    This didn't start with bank accounts. YOU are talking about
bank accounts. Real Bev started by complaining about how many
websites require a cellphone number.

Ok, but in any case sending a text message to your mobile phone doesn't track you. It simply is a reasonable expectation that you have access to your mobile phone. It does add some security, that has been proven. And as "everybody has a mobile phone™", it is easy and cheap to implement.
If you do not have a mobile phone, tough luck. You do not matter :-P
