 I noticed that Google Translate has gone downhill too.

 I tried to learn Mandarin for a few weeks, but the fact that google was
unable to understand what I said 90% of the time convinced me that it
was hopeless.  It worked for French, Spanish and German, but not
Mandarin. I am apparently reasonably good at imitating language sounds,
but not Mandarin.  Or else google is not good at hearing them.
 

Thoughts about open source search engine?

 I wonder if Duck Duck Go just provides a front end to google.
 

I believe it uses Bing mainly. It's quite useful from the security point of view and can get rid of much of the tripe that Google produces but I always come back to Google because the results are much more varied and extensive.
