How does the phone distinguish between any one MK02 and any other?
All bluetooth devices have a unique MAC address (similar to network cards
Thank you. From that information, I found in Developer options there's a
setting to "Show Bluetooth devices without names" which shows MAC addresses
but not for devices that have names such as these MKO2 device names.

And how can I get Android to tell me which one it's connecting to?
After pairing, you should be able to rename the device
 Settings
Connected Devices
click the gear cog of the first MK02
click the pencil icon
enter new name (e.g front/rear/left/right)
click rename
That worked beautifully.
Thanks for the advice.
It even worked when I wasn't connected. It only needed to have been connected & saved prior.
