I have a Pixel 8a, a recent upgrade from a Samsung SM-T719 tablet. In neither can I find a way of saving a particular SMS to the SIM to which it relates. Is there a way of doing this?

Don't think it's an option. Smartphone memory can store thousands of text messages, I remember candybar phones as storing just dozens, then needing deleting in order to receive new messages.
Yes, my researches haven't found anything capable. It's just that the SMS concerns the particular phone number on the SIM but is otherwise impersonal to me except as a convenient reminder. Therefore it would be best stored on the SIM itself, rather than anywhere else not directly linked to it.
