Mint is still a pretty decent distro for beginners.

It's bloatware, really, but far from as bad as Win11 or even Win10.

A beginner's distro needs to be bloatware. You can't expect a beginner
to know what he'll need. So you provide him everything and when he'll
know, he'll be able to use only what he needs.

When I first used RedHat, ~2000, I used the GUIs primarily, even though I
remembered a few UNIX commands from a computer class (PDP-11).

When I discovered Linux, around 1995, Red Hat didn't exist (or I didn't
heard of it: I heard of it only later, once I had a Linux running).
There was only slackware easy to find (in France: remember, at that
time, Internet connecxions weren't as fast as Today). And there was
nothing very good to manage the files. I was neither convicted with
Midnight Commander and not real GUI program was available. So, the
terminal was mandatory.

Eventually I found it easier in most cases to use the terminal.

Yes, I'm using the terminal too, but at the beginning of Linux it was
mandatory. Today it's optional. By now, a lot of things are easy to do
with a mouse without knowledge of what's happening behind the scene. So
beginners don't need/want to learn anymore. For example, renaming a file
is very easy with a mouse. It's no more difficult within the terminal
but you need to learn how to do it with a terminal, you can guess with a
GUI program. So, the mouse seems to be easier than the terminal.

But, if you want to rename hundreds of files, it's neither more
difficult with a GUI program than within the terminal. But it will be
faster within a terminal than within the GUI program in which you need
to rename all your files one by one.
