FOSS has produced yet another image compression algorithm called LERC:
http://esri.github.io/lerc/
LERC has been around for a while but I just recently discovered it.
I have not yet tried it but it offers much faster lossless compression
versus PNG.
Also, lossy compression can be strictly defined by the user.
Yes, folks, this is FOSS. There ain't no hand holding or "click on the
pretty button" interface. One either knows what one is doing or else
one runs like a baby to mamma Micro$lop/Apphole.
I encourage you all to try LERC and report your results.
A lot people on this group have big, fat mouths but when it comes down
to presenting results they fall like a lead balloon.
So after 9 years, who is using this obscure image compression codec?
