 It might have been worth spending that much ~20 years ago, but for most of us, mere age has reduced our hearing range capability by quite a bit, such that Billy Joel's "cheap pair o speakers" does well enough.
For 2 decades at least I listen to music only thru $12 Logitech Z130 desktop speakers, or lightweight Skull Candy headphones.
But pop some quality Sennheiser headphones on your skull and take your hearing back 20 years!  I own some old HD-580s, and the sound is just amazing.
