Motif was the one that pioneered multiple desktops. It became common very
quickly on *nix GUIs (including e.g. KDE on Linux).
The proprietary vendors like Microsoft and Apple took somewhat longer to
get the idea.
To this day, Apple still hasn't produced a bug-free implementation of
multiple desktops. And in today's culture nobody dares to bring it up
because it might hurt somebody's feelings.
