I built multiple LFS boxes back in 2000 or so. I wouldn't want to use it
for anything other than a learning project, but it was a **great**
experience. I learned quite a lot about building software and how Linux
is put together. It was especially fun when I tried cross-compiling the
kernel on a Pentium II for Pentium I target and kept getting segfaults
because I didn't set -march properly :).
