Microsoft have apparently persuaded users that its “Ribbon” is a good UI
design feature. Trouble is, it originated back in the days before modern
widescreen monitors became popular, so it takes up space along the
dimension where you have less of it to begin with.
LibreOffice has the “Sidebar”, which makes more efficient use of monitor
space.
