Linux doesn't have to compete. Linux can do it as a byproduct of its own development regardless of what others do. Where is Microsoft's OS for smartphones? See, Linux on smartphones made it disappear.
Develop one for desktops as well, and Windows will disappear by itself. By its own weight and idiosyncracies.
