I've tried the experimental version of Wayland in Linux Mint. It had some
issues — some of it was compatibility issues with older applications, but it
also had issues with streaming videos. Noticeable blotches in the dark
portions of the videos (are these "artifacts"?). I think, however, Wayland
is working okay in Fedora. (I'll have to double check now.)

And I'm guessing, as you mentioned, the wait will be longer than what
they're currently claiming. But we'll see. I know there was a lot of
controversy over the SystemD(?) boot loader when it came out but I never ran
into any problems with it. I think Caldera (one of my original experiments
with Linux) used something called "LILO" as the boot loader.
