As for Iranians, yes they had a secular government — until they made the
"mistake" of wanting to profit from their own oil instead of letting
U.S. and European companies take it all. The U.S. sponsored a coup
against the elected government and installed the Shah of Iran and his
thug police. So there is no love for the United States in Iran, even if
many of the citizens long for the days of a secular government. And
here's the important thing to remember about Iranians. If you attack
them, they unite. Even the opposition is patriotic. (Even Iranian Jews
are patriotic.) These are not Arabs who break up into rival tribes when
they see a chance to work with an outside, invading power, for their own
gain.
