There was one saving grace... a very beautiful female flight attendant who let me sit next to my wife, so she could decrease my suffering. Before landing she shooed me away so as not to affect the balance of the 737 (BS!) and I said that of course I have to take my bag and coat so as not to "affect the balance" or else I would be afraid of the plane crashing.
To my great surprise she smiled at my joke, and said, "well, I don't think it would be that serious".

I believe the reason is that, if there is an accident, they can identify you as the person listed to be sitting on 17B.
Not necessary. They can do that by other means. Also people are switching around all the time, so clearly it was a b.s. response. B.s. responses must always be punished to stop them from happening.

For the record, I love flying.
For the record, I hate flying and consider myself being in hell from the moment I step into the airport. It is very difficult for me to imagine a more denigrating, inhuman and undignified way to travel than modern travel by plane.
If I had my own private jet, and my own airport, I might reconsider. Until then, I do my best to never move from the city I am in. Sadly my wife and father make life very difficult for me sometimes, so that is when I do move for their sake. But otherwise, I would happily live the rest of my days next to my beloved fishing lake. =)
