This is "what aboutism" and is irrelevant to the question. Equally wrong if you ask me.

The norm is that you get cover for additional expenses. Not a life of luxury at the tax payer expense and the opportunity to become independently wealthy on tax money.

I find the level of their salaries, the fact, that after one term (or possibly two) they are set for life _on tax payer money_ completely revolting.
This creates an incentive to get only politicians who care about money, and no politician who cares about anything else.
The politicians should by law not earn any more than the average citizen of the country the represent. They should not have immunity and should be judged accordsing to the same laws as the citizens. This is just basic democracy.
Only socialists seem to want to avoid this, but since socialists are an authoritarian breed in sheeps clothing, it is understandable.
