I’m convinced that it was the conflicts between the popes and the temporal
rulers led directly to democracy in the West. Other civilizations
subordinated religion to the temporal rulers. Byzantine patriarchs answered
to the emperors. Moslem imams answered to the cailifs, etc. so there was no
one to object to what the rulers wanted.
