So I view life in prison as the ultimate torture and cruelty. It also punishes the tax payers as well with having to pay for the guy. With the death penalty everyone, including the criminal, wins!

Working at something should be the default for all non-life sentences. They could shovel snow, pick up autumn leaves, fix pot holes, pick up trash, operate soup kitchens etc. etc. ad nauseam, to generate income and make life a bit more tolerable to pay for their crimes.
