 I used CGI and FastCGI mostly, and then Node.js eventually. The server
side js did a little work but with the Esri JavaScript API the client side
did most of the heavy lifting. The backend served up GeoJSON but other
processes created it. The most work was querying the database for
historical information in a couple of applications like crime analysis.

   My last org did use ESRI - there has to be a muta-acronym
   for "rip off LOTS of money because we CAN".
   But, I never scripted it.
   Took one or two classes - but the product was changing
   so fast they were just useless.
   Oddly, my previous boss and I wanted to WRITE a GIS
   way back in the mid 80s ... but the subject was too
   deep and we never really got to it.
   Anyway, try to make the gigabuck server farms do
   most of the work  :-)
