sets up a bunch of rules, audits, checks, etc. This is supposed to make
sure no one gets away with anything, but also makes it hard to do
anything at all.
The operative term is “checks and balances”. Regulatory authorities are
supposed to be free from political interference. Other countries look at
the “revolving door” in the US where the same people are working for a
regulatory authority one moment, and as a lobbyist on behalf of the very
companies being regulated another moment, and wonder why you let them
get away with it.
