Had trouble getting it to connect to gmail when I tried. Of course, I'm
having some server issues with sylpheed, but most of my accs work..

I never tried /direct/ access to gmail through sylpheed. I run my own
(internal) email server (an instance of sendmail), and use fetchmail
(http://fetchmail.berlios.de) to pull down mail routed to my gmail account.
