The installation of a puppet regime in the USA occurred 4 years
ago.
 

Well that of course is another hypothesis, one that I have sympathy with.
No one gets to be POTUS without owing a lot of favours....

The key is not that there may be "puppet strings" (as you say, that's
nearly a given in today' world).

The key is determining to whom those puppet strings connect, and which
ones, when pulled by the holder, result in movement of the puppet.

And that information is *way harder* to suss out from the publicly
available information.
