Today I have managed to get connected to usenet
on Fedora by following these steps
1. Navigate to https://www.eternal-september.org
2. Create and Account, using existing email
3. Get login details from email, password included
4. sudo dnf install slrn
5. export NNTPSERVER=snews://news.eternal-september.org:563
(added to .bashrc) [edit for 80 char limit]
6. Add the following to ~/.slrnrc (change info to yours)

nnrpaccess "snews://news.eternal-september.org:563" "username" "passwd"
set username "johndoe"
set hostname "google.com"

7. slrn -f ~/.jnewsrc --create
