Did you use a suitably recent version of Fortran, namely Fortran 90 at
least? It’s quite a decent language these days.
Not the kind of thing you want a sloppy application developer like me going anywhere near, which is why I choose to avoid it whenever possible, and to use services that hide the complexity, as far as possible.
