Thomas Malthus figured this out over 200 years ago.
He was wrong, though. Human ingenuity (i.e. science and technology)
kept things going long after he thought they would fall apart.
Population in developed countries is now declining. Europe, US and
Canada, Japan, even China.
Also South Korea. Not so sure about the US -- I think the birth rate is
still at or above replacement, but primarily among demographics that are,
shall we say, less likely to be Trump supporters.
Here in NZ, the birth rate is below replacement level, but our population
keeps growing through immigration.
Even Singapore, with 4 million (or is it 5 million now?) people crammed
onto that tiny island, recognizes the drawbacks of a static or declining
population, and is trying to boost growth.
