Even after the persecution of them over so many centuries as “Christ
killers” culminated in the Nazi Holocaust, the lesson still wasn’t
learned: instead of saying “why not just accept Jews as fellow Europeans
and Americans”, it was “let’s give them a ‘homeland’ somewhere out of our
sight and make them somebody else’s problem -- preferably somebody in no
position to say no”.
 

After what happened to the Jews, they weren’t willing to trust other
countries’ good intentions. I thought that was silly in democracies like
the US … until recently.
