I reached the same conclusion many years ago. Thank you, Merton was the name I was looking for but didn't find. Anthony de Mello I think is another one of those fusion guys.
I did follow on the the links, and on it I saw that todays Zen is a fairly modern invention. I was not aware of that. It was renovated during the Meiji restoration. In india, some guy tried to merge marxism and buddhism in the same "modern" spirit.
