The world is strange. At that age, I did go to school myself. Either walking, 15 minutes, or the bus, 5 minutes. Sometimes, accompanied by my father if I started early, otherwise not.
Children today are over protected, and this is destroying an entire generation. There are always exceptions, those are what give me hope, but the vast majority are quite sad.
