Nerds tend to be misfits with interesting backgrounds. The Boston chapter
of the IEEE was very much computer oriented and chasing new ideas. The New
Hampshire chapter was mostly classical electrical engineers who worked for
Public Service of NH, the power company. They were nice guys and all and

This is a strength of technologist culture! I sometimes fear that these days with computer science degrees, and less diverse backgrounds, something has been lost. =/
That is why I enjoy teaching at vocational schools. There you can still get people with the most diverse backgrounds who became interested in technology and want to switch careers. That can yield interesting perspectives!
