How many previous machines were byte-addressable? Was there anything other
than the IBM 360/370 series at that point?
 
While there are lots of guesses about why they did that, as far as I can
tell, they never wrote down the reason to switch the byte order, and I
have looked in a lot of places.
 
It just makes more sense.
 

A lot of older machines were character-addressable. The term “byte” hadn’t
been invented yet. The 1401 (etc), 1620, and many 70xx machines.
