About the first thing I did with MSDOS was buy Brief.

I was upset when Borland bought it and never did anything with it.
I'd had vi on CP/M but used the Wordstar that was bundled with the
system. Finally Vim came along. 'Improved' is an understatement compared
to vanilla vi.
