A reed switch with a small permanent magnet attached to the door to
actuate it can do the detection very simply, cheaply and unobtrusively.

 True. I think I've got a reed switch around someplace. However. for $9 I
got 5 HC-SR501 PIR modules, 2 mounting brackets with screws, a small
screwdriver, and some Dupont wires. You use what you has :)
 True, I could get 20 glass reed switches for that, but then I'd have to
figure out a mount. The sets that are designed for doors and windows are
more expensive.

   They also tend to be "large". I need to *hide* all
   the electronics.
