Indeed, but that is orthogonal to the point I was making.
I have had many *nix machines go tits up on me. essentially running out of RAM and swap.
Very easy to DOS or DDOS an apache server or even a mail server by flooding it with attempts to spoof addresses.
And be unable to ssh in to fix it.
