Motivated by that comment, I just had a quick look and discovered
that, 40 years on, FidoNet is still in use...

There is a hobbyist BITNET network out there, but I don't know
much about it, other than that it exists (or existed at some
point?).  I believe it was run by the same folks that do HECnet?
